RECO Red 8 FEB 23
Mr Harkin, a Hong Kong pensioner, was employed by the Custom House as a Watcher in 1908. His starting wage was 24/- weekly,
He evidently continued his employment during the war and we are now advised by the Custom House that he is in receipt of a wage of 31/- plus a present bonus of 32/7d. Will you please say whether
a pensioner employed in such a capacity is liable to have his pension abated if his emoluments exceed his retiring Hong Kong salary plus
50%. If 80,
there has been an overpayment of approximately £10. since the 1st September last, which we must recover.
With regard to the War period, pensioners who accepted public employment, did not have their pensions abated, and we would suggest that Harkin could be included in this category.
